South Dakota is a landlocked state in the North Central U.S., also part of the Great Plains. Named after the Dakota Sioux tribe, it has nine reservations and a significant indigenous population. It ranks 17th in area, but is the 5th least populous and densely populated. Pierre is the capital, and Sioux Falls is the largest city. The Missouri River splits the state into East and West River regions.
