Census records in Norway are an essential resource for genealogical research, providing detailed information on family histories since the 17th century. The first national census was conducted in 1769, followed by the detailed 1801 census, which listed names, ages, occupations, and household relationships. Regular censuses were taken every ten years from 1815 onward, with particularly useful records available for 1865, 1900, and 1910.

Earlier local censuses and parish registers also help trace Norwegian ancestry. Combined with extensive church and land records, Norway’s census data is invaluable for tracking family lineages, migration patterns, and historical demographics.
