Census records in Lithuania are an important resource for genealogical research, reflecting the country’s complex history under various rulers. Before independence in 1918, Lithuania was part of the Russian Empire, with the 1897 Russian Empire Census being the first major enumeration, documenting names, ages, birthplaces, occupations, and ethnicities.
Earlier population records exist from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth period, including tax censuses and parish registers. After independence, Lithuania conducted censuses in 1923 and later under Soviet rule. While access to some records is limited, census data, combined with church and land records, is essential for tracing Lithuanian ancestry and migration patterns.
