Census records in Hungary are an essential resource for genealogical research, providing insights into family histories from the early modern period. The first comprehensive national census was conducted in 1784–1787 under the Habsburg Empire, followed by additional censuses in 1850, 1869, and regularly from 1880 onward.
These records document names, ages, occupations, birthplaces, and household structures, reflecting Hungary’s diverse ethnic and religious communities, including Hungarian, German, Jewish, and Slovak populations. While many census records were lost or damaged during wars, those that survive, alongside parish registers and civil records, are invaluable for tracing Hungarian ancestry and family migrations.
