Wisconsin started maintaining official birth records in 1907. Prior to this, churches, local governments, and family Bibles served as primary sources of birth documentation. Counties began informal registration in the mid-1800s. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services oversees records, and the Wisconsin Historical Society provides access to older, genealogically significant records.
Wisconsin, with its significant German and Scandinavian immigrant populations, also has roots with Native American tribes such as the Ojibwe and Ho-Chunk. The state’s farming history is central to its genealogical records.
