Nebraska state coat of arms (illustrated, 1876)

Nebraska's birth records were officially recorded starting in 1904, although some earlier records exist at the county level. Prior to this, births were often documented in church registries, family Bibles, or newspapers. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services manages birth certificates, which are restricted for 100 years before becoming publicly accessible.

Nebraska’s history is deeply tied to westward migration, including the Homestead Act of 1862. Native American tribes such as the Omaha and Pawnee have significant genealogical importance.
