West Virginia implemented statewide birth registration in 1917, but many counties maintained earlier records dating back to the early 1800s. Churches, family Bibles, and local government offices were common sources of birth documentation. The West Virginia Health Statistics Center manages modern birth records, which are restricted for 100 years.
West Virginia’s coal mining history attracted European immigrants, including Irish, Italian, and Eastern European communities. The state’s Appalachian heritage also plays a key role in genealogical studies.
