Minnesota started systematically recording births in 1870, but many earlier records exist in church registries and county archives. Lutheran and Catholic churches, in particular, maintained birth and baptismal records for settlers.
The Minnesota Department of Health manages official birth certificates, which are restricted for 100 years before becoming public. Minnesota, with its strong Scandinavian and German immigrant heritage, also has deep roots with Native American tribes such as the Dakota and Ojibwe. The state’s history of farming and settlement plays a key role in genealogical research.
