The Dominican Republic began officially registering births with the establishment of civil registration in 1945. Prior to this, the Roman Catholic Church kept records of births, baptisms, marriages, and deaths. The colonial government also started practicing civil registration during the French occupation in 1801, but only some records from 1823 have been found.
