Russian military booklet
Russian military booklet from 1903.

The vast Russian military bureaucracy produced millions of records vital to genealogical research. Before 1917, conscription lists, service files, and muster rolls were meticulously maintained by the Imperial Army. These often included birthplaces, social classes, occupations, and family statuses. Following the Revolution, Soviet military records expanded massively, especially during World War II, with detailed personnel files, award records, and POW documentation. Archives such as the Russian State Military Archive (RGVA) preserve many of these documents. For researchers, Russian military records not only provide key personal details but also trace ancestors' involvement in major historical events like the Napoleonic Wars, the Russo-Japanese War, and the World Wars.
