Indiana military records span from early territorial conflicts to the 20th century. During the Civil War, Indiana contributed a large number of Union troops, and service records often contain age, residence, physical descriptions, and military unit details. Later records, including World War I and World War II draft cards, document nearly every eligible man, with personal and family information. Indiana also kept detailed veterans' pension applications and burial records. Resources are available at the Indiana State Archives, the National Archives as well as local historical societies. For genealogists, Indiana military records provide not only essential biographical facts but also narratives of service, sacrifice, and movement across the growing American frontier.
