Formerly known as Van Diemen’s Land, Tasmania’s government records are rich with early colonial detail. From the 1803 penal colony onwards, convict records, land grants, and muster rolls provide foundational genealogical data. The Tasmanian Government Gazette includes notices on licenses, appointments, and land deals. Civil registration began in 1838 and is supported by electoral rolls and police records. School registers, hospital files, and mental health institution records offer further clues. Given Tasmania’s small population and long recordkeeping history, government documents are particularly effective for tracing multi-generational families, including both free settlers and transported convicts.
