Crimean Tatars (Crimean Tatar language: qırımtatarlar) - the Turkic people, who live compactly in Ukraine - in the Crimea region. They speak the Crimean Tatar language, and most of them are Sunni Muslims.
According to Ukrainian law, Crimean Tatars, along with Karaites and Krymchaks, are indigenous peoples of Ukraine. This is regulated by the Law of Ukraine "On Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine," adopted in 2021, which enshrined this status for the aforementioned peoples who do not have their own state outside Ukraine.
In 1783, against the backdrop of the annexation of the Crimean Khanate by the Russian Empire, a large number of Crimean Tatars emigrated to the Ottoman Empire.
