An important aspect of studying Bulgarian genealogy is understanding the types of kinships. Below are the types of kinship and their names in Bulgarian.
Types of kinship
Father - "bashta" (in some Ukrainian villages with Bulgarian population the word "tiatyu", "tate" is also used);
Mother - "maika" (in some Ukrainian villages with Bulgarian population the word "mama" is also used);
Son - "syn";
Daughter - "deshterya";
Sister (older) - "kaka";
Brother (older) - "batko";
Aunt (on both father's and mother's side) - "lelya";
Uncle (on father's side) - "chicho" (also "chichu");
Uncle (on mother's side) - "uichu", "vuichu";
Uncle's wife (on the mother's side) - "uchinaya", "bulya" (these variants are popular among Bulgarians of Ukraine);
Uncle's wife (on the father's side) - "china", "bulya" (these variants are popular among Bulgarians of Ukraine);
Husbands of two sisters - "bajinaki"
Two cousins - "bratovched", "bratovchedka" (if we are talking about three cousins, a step is added - "secondary bratovched", four cousins - "terti bratovched").
