Upon the initiative of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society Melbourne , I was prompted to use myheritage.com to link with my ancestors from Ithaca in Greece who lived In Kefalonia and Exoghi , Ithaca . I hope these efforts bear fruit and am very grateful to Peter Raftopoulos for recommending this course of action .
My paternal grandfather , Efstathios , probably left Ithaca at an early age , went to sea , working with the Stathatos vessels then married my grandmother , Mario Kairis from Andros . The family then grew in Andros with my father , Aleco , marrying an Andros girl , my mum , Despoina Cambanis so the Ithacan connections diluted.
Whilst trying to trace my grandfather’s siblings , I have done the same for my other grandparents , all from Andros and I have derived enormous help from our Kaireios library , [1]whom I will encourage to link here in an attempt to consolidate numerous family trees which are not available online but only in journals .
