
The 1897 Russian Empire census was a general census of the Russian Empire conducted on 28 January (according to the Julian calendar) or 9 February (according to the Gregorian calendar) 1897.
The census was initiated by Russian statistician P. P. Semenov-Tyan-Shansky.
Genealogists are particularly interested in the census forms from this census.
According to the results of this census, more than 55 million people indicated Russian as their native language. The second most common language was Ukrainian, which was indicated as the native language by more than 22 million people. Polish was indicated by almost 8 million people, Belarusian by almost 6 million, and Yiddish by slightly more than 5 million people. With regard to the Jewish language, it should be clarified that this refers to Yiddish.
