This is a relatively recent form of surname consisting of two aspects of nature arbitrarily joined together. In this instance, the name is composed of the element “ahl”, denoting an “alder three”, and “gren”, indicating “branch”. Hereditary surnames in Sweden, as in the other Scandinavian Countries, are a relatively recent phenomenon. Indeed, before the eighteenth century, the common practice had been to distinguish between persons bearing the same first name by attaching the first name of the father to that of the child, suffixed by “sson”, meaning “son of”, or sdotter”, indicating “daughter of”. By the nineteenth century, patronymic names ending in “sson” had been assumed as hereditary surname, and so great was the profusion of surnames ending in “sson” that a nationwide government campaign was instituted whereby the majority of families sought to adopt new surnames. Rather than succumb to foreign influence, a policy was developed which brought about the combining of two words to manufacture completely individual names. A typical Swedish ornamental name consists of aspects of nature which the Swedes held dear, such as some pleasant aspect from landscape or seascape. At times, names took on a locative meaning where the natural objects actually had a physical connection to the bearer’s place of residence. One named Ahlgren may actually have lived near an alder three with distinguishing branch. More often, the combination of elements were technically impossible, as in the name Sjögren (“sea branch”)BEAZON OF ARMS : Per pale, first argent, a demi-vol sable, second azure, a fess argent, charged with a barrulet gules.Translation : Vol (Wings) dente Freedom. Argent (white of silver) signifies Peace and Sincerity. A fess divides the shield horizontally and represents the Breast-Plate og Knight’s suit of armor. It symbolizes his wounds and the Blood of his enemies. CRESE : A stag issuant gules.ORIGIN : SWEDEN Dette webstedet ble til sist oppdatert July 31 2022 og det har for tiden 3 registrerte medlemmer.
