Why is MyHeritage asking me for my date of birth, gender, or phone number?

See why MyHeritage sometimes asks for your date of birth, gender, or phone number, and learn how to complete or skip this step

If you've noticed a pop-up while browsing your DNA results, or spotted a couple of new fields when resetting your password, you're in the right place.

MyHeritage sometimes asks for a few missing account details — your date of birth, gender, or phone number — to keep your profile complete. Here's what to expect on each screen, and how to handle it.

On your DNA pages

You might see a pop-up titled "Complete your profile" when visiting your DNA Overview, DNA Matches, or Ethnicity Estimate page. It reads: "It looks like we are missing some details to provide you with the best experience at MyHeritage. Please fill them, it takes just a minute." It only appears if your date of birth or gender is missing from your account — if we already have one of these on file, only the missing field is shown.

To fill it in, enter the missing details and select "Confirm". You'll see "Thanks! Your details were successfully saved."

If you'd rather not right now, close the pop-up using the "X" in the corner — it won't ask again for 30 days.

When resetting or changing your password

On the reset password screen, you may see a "Complete your profile" section added below the password fields, with the same message: "It looks like we are missing some details to provide you with the best experience at MyHeritage. Please fill them, it takes just a minute." Only the fields you're missing — gender, date of birth, or phone number — will show up.

Date of birth and gender need to be filled in if they appear here. Leaving date of birth blank shows "This field is required" underneath the field.

Phone number is labeled "Phone number (Optional)" on this screen — you can leave it blank and select "Continue".

Once saved, you'll see "Thanks [your name]! Your new password and details have been saved successfully" and can select "Back to Log In".

Do I have to fill this in?

On your DNA pages: no. Close the pop-up and you'll be taken right back to what you were doing.

On the password reset screen: date of birth and gender need to be filled in if they're requested there, since they're required to complete that step. Phone number stays optional on this screen either way.

Why we ask

We sometimes reach out for a few extra details like these to keep your profile accurate and to help keep your account secure — for example, a phone number on file can help you get back into your account if you're ever locked out. Any information you add is handled the same way as the rest of your MyHeritage profile, and is protected under our Privacy Policy.
