What should I do if I lost my DNA kit's activation code?

Lost your DNA kit's activation code? Find out where to look on your kit and what to do if you already mailed it back unactivated

If you can't find the activation code for your DNA kit, you're in the right place — here's where to look, and what to do if you've already sent your sample back without activating it.

Your kit's activation code (also called the kit number) appears in several places, so if you still have your kit, you should be able to find it on:

  • The gray outer bag the kit came in

  • The kit box

  • The vial itself

  • The activation card inside the kit

You only need to find the code in one of these places to activate your kit. For step-by-step instructions, see: How do I activate my DNA kit?

What if I already sent my sample back without activating it, and I don't have the kit anymore?

If you mailed your sample to the lab before activating your kit, and you no longer have the box, vial, or card to check, you haven't lost your results — but you'll need to wait until your kit reaches the lab before the code becomes available again.

Once your kit arrives at the lab and is scanned in, you'll receive an email titled "[your name], complete your MyHeritage DNA kit activation (kit MH-XXXXXX)." The subject line of that email includes your kit number.

Please note:

If you have already sent two or more samples from individuals of the same gender to our lab without activating the kits first, we won't be able to tell which sample belongs to which kit — so those kits will need to be replaced. Please view Step 2 in this article on how to request free replacements.

What if I didn't buy my kit directly from MyHeritage?

If you purchased your kit through a reseller like Amazon, or received it as a gift from someone who bought it from a reseller and not from us directly, keep in mind that these kits are only linked to a MyHeritage account once they're activated. Before that, we have no way to look up the kit on our end. There is no connection between the buyer and the kit serial number until the moment of activation as we do not know which kit was given to the buyer by that reseller.

This means that if you sent your sample to the lab without activating it first, and you no longer have the kit to check for the code, the tracker and email from the lab reminding you to activate described above won't be available to you the way they are for kits bought directly from us.

In that case, contact our support team with proof of purchase and a photo of the kit code from anywhere it still appears (the box, vial, or activation card, if you have any of these), and we'll help you sort it out.
