How do I activate my DNA kit?

Activate your kit before sending it to the lab

The analysis of your sample cannot begin until activation is complete. If your kit arrives at the lab without being activated:

  • Processing will not begin until you activate it.

  • Your kit loses its place in the processing queue based on arrival date.

  • Once activated, your kit goes to the back of the line rather than returning to its original position.

Always activate your kit before sending it to our lab to ensure the fastest processing time.

How to activate your DNA kit

You can activate your kit in two ways:

  • Directly from the MyHeritage app (Scanning).

  • Via the MyHeritage website.

Click on the relevant option below to open the collapsible instructions:

Option 1 - Activate via the MyHeritage app (Scanning)

The easiest and most reliable way to activate your kit is through the MyHeritage app.

The app lets you scan the activation code directly with your device's camera, which eliminates the risk of typos when entering the kit code manually.

To activate via the app, open the app menu, go to "DNA" and tap "Activate DNA kit". For full step-by-step instructions, see: How can I activate my DNA kit from the MyHeritage app?

Option 2 - Activate via the MyHeritage website

If you prefer to activate on a computer or mobile browser, go to www.myheritage.com/dna/activate.

Step 1 — Log in to your account

Make sure you are logged into the correct MyHeritage account — ideally the one the kit was purchased from. You will see your name in the top-right corner of the screen. If it's not you, click "Log in as a different user".

If you don't have a MyHeritage account yet, click "Sign up for free" to register before activating the kit.

Step 2 — Enter the activation code

Enter the activation code (kit number), which you can find on the side of the vial or on the activation card.

Note: "MH" is already pre-filled on the page — you only need to type the numbers and letters that follow it.

Step 3 — Click "Continue"

Step 4 — Select whose DNA is being tested

Under the question "Whose DNA will this kit be testing?", select "Mine" if the kit is for your own DNA. If you are activating a kit for someone else, select "Someone else's". For further instructions on activating a kit for a family member, see: How do I activate a DNA kit purchased for a family member?

Step 5 — Accept the terms and complete activation

Read and accept the Service Terms and Consent Agreement, then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the activation.

Activating kits for multiple family members

Each kit has its own unique activation code and must be activated separately at www.myheritage.com/dna/activate.

Family members who don't yet have a MyHeritage account will be able to sign up before activating their kit. You may also activate their kits yourself and manage their DNA results from your own account — note that doing so requires their explicit permission.

Please note: The person who activates a DNA kit becomes its DNA manager, regardless of who purchased it. Reassigning the kit to a different profile does not transfer the DNA manager rights.
