What is a GEDCOM file?

GEDCOM, an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication, is a specification for exchanging genealogical data between different genealogy software.

A GEDCOM file is the most widely recognized file format standard for creating a family tree. Most genealogical programs recognize this format, which allows you to easily move your tree to the genealogical program of your choosing.

Note: A GEDCOM file is a text file, that doesn't include the actual photos but it may contain the links to the photos' original location on your computer or family site. A GEDCOM file also doesn't contain information that is exclusive to MyHeritage such as links to Smart Matches and Record Matches.
