About our family
The name Gushue is an English corruption of the French surname Guizot. Its origins are traceable to the Island of Jersey, which lies off the coast of Normandy, but which is part of the United Kingdom. Some prominent members of the extended family include a former president of France, Jean Guizot, who served during France's Third Republic (1870-1940). Among the prominent Gushue's are Joe Gushue, former supervisor of the NBA Referees, Raymond Gushue, a founder and the first president of Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Brad Gushue an olympic Gold Medalist in curling from Newfoundland. The island of Newfoundland is the only place where the surname is common, and all Gushues living in the United States can trace their roots back to the island, and by degrees back to the Isle of Jersey.
Missing pieces
I am looking for the parents for my paternal grandmother's grandfather, Edward Wade, and his ancestors. Grandma Gushue told me that the Wades emmigrated to Newfoundland from the Isle of Wight.
