How do I export specific branches of my family tree in Family Tree Builder?

Updated over 4 months ago

Before you start exporting specific branches, we suggest you review your family tree and choose which ancestral branches to export. It will save you a lot of time when you get to the list of people you choose to add to the exported file.

To export specific branches of your family tree:

1. Open your tree in Family Tree Builder.

2. Click on the ‘File’ menu in the upper menu bar and select ‘Export GEDCOM’.

3. Click ‘Save As’, choose the folder on your computer you’d like to save to and click ‘Next’.

In your case, you will want to give this tree a different name than your main tree. You may want to name it after the eldest ancestor in the branch you are exporting, for example.

4. If you wish to fill in author information or add a description to the file, you can do so here. It is not necessary, though. Click ‘Next’.

5. Choose the language of the tree. Click ‘Next’.

6. This is the screen where you will choose a specific branch to export. Choose the ‘Include only selected people’ option and click ‘Select’.

7. Click ‘Add’ to select people from your tree.

8. Select the person you want to add. (In the next step you will choose if to include descendants, so select only the eldest ancestors).

9. For each person you choose, you can include ‘Descendants and Spouses’, ‘Descendants’ only, ‘Spouses’ only, or only ‘This person’. You can also include ‘Ancestors’.

Use the ‘Edit’ button to do this. When you’re finished click ‘OK’.

10. Then click ‘Next’.

11. If you have photos in the tree, you’ll see the following screen. It is recommended to click ‘Yes’.

12. Click ‘Finish’. You have just created a new tree which contains a certain branch of your family only.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Exporting a branch from the family tree will not affect the main tree in the Family Tree Builder.

However, if you would like to keep the main tree and have the branch tree as a completely new tree both on the family site online and in Family Tree Builder, you will have to import the branch GEDCOM to the family site first and after restore it to the Family Tree Builder.

And then, please click here to learn how to restore the tree to your Family Tree Builder.

In order to sync the new project, you will want to open it in Family Tree Builder first.

Go to ‘File’ in the menu and select ‘Import GEDCOM’ option to import the GEDCOM file you just created. Then sync it with your family site.
