How can I restore my tree in Family Tree Builder?

Updated over 5 months ago

There are two options for restoring your family tree. You can either restore the tree from your computer or from your family site.

To restore a family tree project from your computer:

Family Tree Builder automatically creates a backup of your project whenever it detects a need to do so, such as when you are making a significant change from a previously saved project version or before performing a restore operation.

It’s also possible to save a backup copy manually. For more information please use the following article: How do I backup my Family Tree Builder project?

By default, the backup is created in the ‘Backup’ folder of your project’s directory on your computer.

In order to restore a backup from there or from another place on your computer, if you saved a backup copy manually, please do the following:

1. Open Family Tree Builder software.

2. In the upper menu bar click on ‘File’ and select ‘Restore project’.

3. Select to restore the project from a file on the disk.

4. Choose the backup according to the date.

If you would like to restore the project saved by you manually outside the project’s folder, click on the ‘…’ button under “Alternatively, you can restore your project from a file that you save outside the project’s folder” option to browse for the file on your computer.

5. If you just want to restore the tree you’re currently working on, don’t change the name.

** If you want to use the file you restore as a new project, please check ‘Restore as a new project’ option and enter a new name.

6. If you selected to restore the file to the existing project, you will see the following screen:

Click on ‘Next’.

7. Success!
