DNA Matches are people who share DNA segments with you. Each DNA Match is thought to be related to you, with one or more shared segments inherited from one or more common ancestors. Filtering lets you view a subset of your DNA Matches at a time, focusing on those that match particular criteria, of more interest to you. Using the filter toolbar, you can combine multiple filters, and filter matches by additional criteria such as those that have a family tree, have shared ancestral surnames with you or have Smart Matches™ with you. To reach the DNA Overview page and access the graphical filters for DNA Matches, simply click “Overview” in the “DNA” menu:
The DNA Overview page displays a summary of your Ethnicity Estimate, and a summary of your DNA Matches, with a graphical breakdown of the matches according to their estimated relationships and country of residence.
Click on the "DNA Matches" button to see the list of matches:
Here is a detailed description of the different filtering methods for your DNA Matches:
1. Filtering by tree details
The first fitler is “Tree details”. By using the Tree details filter, you can see only those matches that have, for example, a family tree, a shared ancestral surname with you, or Smart Matches™. These are the options you have in the "Tree details" filter:
- Has Theory of Family Relativity™
- Has Smart Matches™
- Has shared surnames
- Has shared place
- Has family tree
2. Filtering by relationships Using the Relationships filter, you can easily see how many of the DNA Matches are close family (immediate family through first cousins), extended family or distant relatives.
3. Filtering by location This filter will help you to view your matches according to the country of residence that you have selected in the list:
Note: for consistency, this filter is based on the country of residence of your matches, and not on family tree information such as country of birth. The country of birth may be very useful and it is sometimes different than the current country of residence, but it’s not available for DNA Matches without a family tree.
4. Filtering by labels
With this filter, you can view only the DNA Matches you have previously labeled.
If you haven't created any labels to your DNA Matches yet, you can do so by clicking on "+ Create new label."

Click “Clear filters”, to clear the filters and reset the DNA Matches to the default display.
NOTE:
It is possible to use more than one filter at the same time, so that you can easily view specific groups of DNA Matches. For example: extended family members located in Germany who have shared surnames with you.
