How do I explore the Ethnicities Map?

To navigate to “Ethnicities around the world,” please do this:

1. Log into your account on MyHeritage.

2. Hover over the DNA tab. and click on 'DNA Tools'.

3. On the next page, select 'Ethnicities Map'.

Alternatively, you can visit the direct link http://www.myheritage.com/ethnicities.

This will take you to the main page of the “Ethnicities around the world” feature.

There are two ways to navigate through the feature:

Select the “By country” tab to view the top ethnicities in a given country;

Select the “By ethnicity” tab to view the top countries for a given ethnicity.

Top ethnicities in each country

If you want to view the top ethnicities in a given country, select the “By country” tab:

By selecting the “By country” tab, you can view the top ethnicities in each country. This information is currently available on more than 50 countries, and more will be added from time to time. Choose any country from the list, or select it on the map, to see the most common ethnicities:

Note: Countries are arranged by continent and, if a country name is displayed in dimmed gray, that means we don’t yet have enough data for it. Select countries listed in black.

Once you choose a country, you’ll see a list of the most common ethnicities of DNA test-takers who currently live in that country, based on aggregated data of MyHeritage users.

For example, when you select “Sweden,” you’ll see that the top ethnicity in Sweden is Scandinavian, followed by Finnish. It’s important to note that this is based on country of residence and not on country of birth from the family trees.

You’ll see up to the top five most common ethnicities in the country you select. To see a complete list, click on “Show all ethnicities”:

Because all percentages are based on MyHeritage DNA data, as more people order MyHeritage DNA kits and receive results, percentages will change.

Note: Percentages for the regions won’t total 100% because we aren’t showing how much Scandinavian each person in Sweden received in their DNA results. Instead, you see the percentage of MyHeritage DNA users in Sweden who have at least 5% Scandinavian in their Ethnicity Estimate.

We’re showing what percent of people in a country share some amount of each ethnicity — the more people in that country who have a given ethnicity, the higher that ethnicity will rank in that country.

To choose another country, click the “All countries” link at the top left, or the “Select another country” link:

Note: For the United States, you can view top ethnicities by state. This map and list work the same way as the global map and list — simply select any state to see the most common ethnicities in that state.

Top countries by ethnicity

You can also see where different ethnicities are most common.

To view the top countries for a given ethnicity, select the “By ethnicity” tab. Then, select an ethnicity from the list or the map:

For example, if you learned your own Ethnicity Estimate that you are Finnish, you might be interested to see where other people with Finnish ethnicity live.

If you select “Finnish,” you’ll see the countries in which Finnish is a common ethnicity. The top five countries will be listed in the results box, in descending order, starting with the country where the highest percentage of people are part-Finnish — in our example, it’s Finland.

Click on any country on the map to jump to the Top ethnicities page for that country.

Compare your results

If you are logged in on a desktop computer or a tablet and have your own DNA data on MyHeritage, you can compare your results to our entire database.

To do that, click on any country or any ethnicity.

Then click “Show your DNA results” on the upper right side of the map:

Click on any of your ethnicities to explore in which countries or U.S. states your ethnicities are most common.

Next, you can check out the most common ethnicities in the state or country where you live. This can tell you how similar or different you are from your neighbors!

Ethnicities around the world is updated regularly as new MyHeritage DNA data is added. Check back later to see results for countries that don’t yet have enough data.
