How can I transfer my FamilyTreeDNA family tree to MyHeritage?

You can transfer the family tree you created on FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA) to MyHeritage and take advantage of all MyHeritage enhanced tree features. You can do that whether you already have a MyHeritage account or not.

Here’s how you can transfer your tree:

1. Log in to your FTDNA account and go to your tree.

2. A pop-up window will appear explaining that FamilyTreeDNA is retiring their tree builder tool. Click on the “Learn more” button.

3. You will be led to a page with more details about the new integration. Click on “Get started now” to initiate the process.

4. A pop-up window will list all your data that will be transferred to MyHeritage. Click “I approve” to continue the transfer.

5. You’ll be redirected to a “Welcome to MyHeritage” page on which you will be able to log in to your existing MyHeritage account or create a new one.

6. On the next page, please read and confirm the ‘Term of account linking’.

7. If you already have a MyHeritage account, click “Log in” at the bottom of the page. If you aren’t yet on MyHeritage, fill out the details on the signup form and click “Get started” to create a free account on MyHeritage.

After the account linkage is complete, you will be given the option to link a family tree to a DNA kit by choosing to:

a) Transfer your family tree from FamilyTreeDNA
b) Link the DNA kit to your current MyHeritage family tree
c) Start a new family tree on MyHeritage

8. If you choose to transfer your family tree from FamilyTreeDNA, the transfer will start and you see a page like the one below:

If you have more than one family tree in your account, you’ll be able to choose which one you’d like to link.

The transfer may take a while depending on the size of the family tree. We’ll email you when your tree is ready.

Privacy

The privacy settings on MyHeritage are slightly different from those on FamilyTreeDNA. This means that when your tree is transferred to MyHeritage, it can be private, shared with site members, or public. For more details about MyHeritage privacy settings, please visit: What are the privacy options for my family site?

In the past, FamilyTreeDNA conducted internal research using family tree data stored on their site. If you choose to transfer a family tree from FamilyTreeDNA to MyHeritage, you are given the option to permit MyHeritage to periodically share updates from your tree back to FamilyTreeDNA (where your tree originally came from). This option only applies to family trees that originated on FamilyTreeDNA. If you change your mind, you can withdraw your consent.

Note:

No genetic data is shared between the two companies. The only data that is shared is family tree data.
