Can I move my family tree from one family site to another?

Please Note:

Uploading the GEDCOM of the family tree to that other family site will create a new family tree on this family site and not merge it with any existing tree on that same family site. Additionally, MyHeritage does not support merging two family sites directly.

If you edit your family tree in Family Tree Builder, it’s really easy to simply sync your family tree to another family site. This FAQ can help you sync to another family site: How do I make sure that I am syncing my tree with the correct site?

You can also use Family Tree Builder to merge trees offline before syncing them to MyHeritage.

If you edit your tree online on your family site, you’ll need to export a GEDCOM file of the family tree and then import it to the new family site.

To export a GEDCOM file from your family site, please take the following steps:

  1. Log in to your family site.

  2. Move your mouse cursor over "Family tree" and click on "Manage Trees".

  3. On the page that opens, click on "Export to GEDCOM" on the right side next to the name of the tree you would like to export.

4. On the next page you can choose whether to include photos to the GEDCOM file. Then click "Begin the export".

5. You will then receive an email with the link to download your GEDCOM file.

Save the file to your computer.

Then you will need to upload that same GEDCOM into the site where you would like to move it, following these steps:

Please note:

After importing, review the data for duplicates and reconcile profiles as needed to ensure accuracy.

1. Log in to your family site.

2. Move your mouse cursor on the ‘Family Tree’ tab and select ‘Import GEDCOM’.

3. Browse your computer for the GEDCOM file and click ‘Upload’.

4. Depending on the size of the file, it may take a few minutes to upload.

5. In order to see your new family tree, click on the ‘Family Tree’ tab.

*When you upload a GEDCOM file to your family site, you will also receive an email notification when the tree is ready to be viewed with a link to see the tree. Additionally, you can use MyHeritage's tools to reconcile and merge duplicate profiles that may appear after the import.
