The descendants of nomadic proto-Mongols, the majority of Mongolians today live in the modern-day nation of Mongolia and the Mongolian autonomous region of China, with a sizable diaspora in Russia. Mongolia was the meeting point for a large variety of religious traditions a thousand years ago: traditional shamanism, Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism all held sway over the region. Between the 12th and 13th centuries, Genghis Khan formed the Mongol Empire, which eventually grew to be the largest contiguous empire in the world.
