I have uploaded my family tree successfully, and am quite amazed by how cool this site is working out to be.
I have a question about the immersive tree on the front page (which is REALLY nice, by the way). When I click on my little brother, it brings up he and his former wife with divorce, and their one child. He is remarried with 2 more kids.
When I click on my OTHER brother, it shows he and his current wife, and their 2 children. He has 1 child from a previous marriage. (my goodness, do I sound like a Jerry Springer episode?)
The questions are: 1) why is it not consistent between the two family members, one showing current spouse, and another showing former spouse? and 2) is there a way to show BOTH spouses, one with the broken ring, and the other with the whole ring on the same page? that way all the kids are shown together.
I will break your question down into two parts: one concerning marriages/spouses and the other concerning children.
---I'm going to explain to you the process as well as the idea behind it to help you get a better grasp on how Family Tree Builder is structured---
Ready? Here we go....
1. Why is it not consistent between the two family members, one showing current spouse, and another showing former spouse?
In Family Tree Builder, the first spouse you add is considered the "primary spouse" and is displayed on the family tree by default.
In order to change the priority (primary, secondary) of a spouse you can use the "Manage Spouses" command. In FTB go to the genealogy card of the person who remains a part of your family after the divorce (e.g. if your brother divorced your sister-in-law, go to your brother's genealogy card).
Click on the "Edit" button and choose "Spouses" then "Manage Spouses". A popup will appear detailing all the marriages listed for that person. In the lower right hand corner of the screen, you will see a little button that looks like a clock with a green arrow on it.
Use this button to change the order of spouses and set a "primary spouse" (the one that will be shown in Tree View and also in your Immersive Tree after publishing to the net).
2. Is there a way to show BOTH spouses, one with the broken ring, and the other with the whole ring on the same page?
Currently, it is possible to see only one spouse at a time. But that doesn't mean that we can't see all your brother's children at once. :)
1. In FTB children are connected to a husband/wife (or husband/husband, wife/wife if you're the progressive type ;) family group. That means that when a new spouse is entered, the children of the former marriage stay with the former family group and are not shown as belonging to the family group which is made up of the new husband/wife.
What we need to do in order to show all the children under one family group is to use the "Attach Child" feature. Basically this feature designates to which family a child is connected (not necessarily related) and therefore where she/he is displayed in the tree.
This feature is located in the "Family" section of a family group. Look for the narrow blue rectangle between the children and parents. This box contains all the info which is related to the family as a whole and not to one specific individual.
Click "Edit" -> "Children" -> "Attach Child". A popup will appear listing all the members in your family tree. Select the name of the child you would like to "Attach".
After you have selected the child you will get a "warning" asking you to designate the revised relationship of that child in the family tree. The options look like this:
a. Detach existing parents and attach new parents
b. Existing parents are adopting, new parents are biological (natural)
c. Existing parents are natural (biological) and new parents are adopting.
In your brother's case, you will choose option C.
Now go back to Tree View in FTB and check to make sure the children are displayed with your brother and his new wife.
Oh, and don't forget to save.
It might seem like a complicated process the first time you read this post, but it's really not. Once you do it a couple of times, you'll get the hang of handling both marriages and children.
Good luck - and thanks for the compliment! I'm glad you enjoy!
Hi! I had the same concern before with my unmarried aunt who has children from two different relationships. I learned that when you click on the "spouse" details, whichever is listed first will be shown on the tree, and any other spouse (and descendants from that other spouse) will be hidden. Hope this helps at all.
Hi, all! Alright so I've seen a lot of people talking about photos not showing up on their page. I have been having the same problem. I was looking around at all the different pages of my site and when I looked at the Places page I noticed the names of the photos I had associated with a person in my tree. I clicked them and the photos are there! I have no idea why but does anyone else have this problem? Is this a bug? Is there something I can do to resolve this or is this a problem the tech team needs to resolve?
I feel the same way. Also, I'm still having the problem that if I don't add the photos immediately after creating the album, I won't be able to add them later. I'd rather Tag things than put them in albums. When I uploade a photo, I'd like to be able to select from tags we as members have already created--ex. Travel, Family Gatherings, Babies, Pets, etc.
I do love the frames we are able to add to photos though. That's a nice touch.
When I would send an invitation and replace the first paragraph with my own text, I get an error when previewing about removing the tag in the email. The tag was the default tag for the link to respond to the invitation.
hi there - just started building site today, sent some invitations to family copying myself. tried both html and text invites, but when you click the link to join, i get an error message that the invitation doesn't exist or was invalid.
