My branch of the Engelbrecht family descended from Willem Adriaan Engelbrecht born 1841, who married Helena Johanna Pool on 16th Jan 1685, in Namaquland, my great grandparents, are the carrieirs of a form of neuropathy, Charcot Marie Tooth. Are there any other descendants of this couple that carry rthe gene? My grandfather was Coenraad who married Cornelia Huisamen, and he had the gene and passed it on to all five of his daughters. This is not a fatal disease, but has problems varying in severity. We have been lucky that although there are males and females with the gene, from all five daughters, none of them have been affected so badly that they are in wheelchairs. In the USA there are many support groups for this gene carried disease, none here, although the muscular dystrophy, a non related disease, website on the internet for SA does carry some advice. Would love to hear from any fellow gene carriers.
