I'm trying to trace my mothers birth mother, on my mums birth certificate her mothers name was Enid Pengilley, married to Ernest Johnson. My mum was born 1929, and we believe her mum was born around 1900, although not sure exactly. I don't think she was really married to Ernest johnson, as mums sisters mum was married to E Johnson. We believe that Enid died not long after mum was born but possibly her and E Johnson went off together as he certainly did. The only Enid Pengilley i can find is Enid Vera k pengilley born 1900, but can't be sure this is the one or not.

It would be nice to find out what happened to Enid and whether or not i have the right one.

Hope someone can help

Thanks

Hello Peter. I've just found this site and I have some information on Enid Vera Knowles Pengilley but it might not be of much use to you as I don't know if she is the right Enid. I've  researched a branch of my family tree in England and have sent to England for certificates for various members, including some for Enid but there is no mention of a Johnson. However, I'll do some more research now as I'd love to find some living relatives in England!  Enid was born on 26/May?/1900,  address 37 Athelstone Rd. Hastings, father William George Pengilley, postman and Florence Pengilley, formally Richards. She was married on 23/12/1922 to Walter George Albert Garnett aged 23, plumber and gasfitter journeyman who resided at 26 Keswick Ave Portsmouth. Enid was 22 years old and her profession was a mental nurse at Dickens Villa Mental Hospital, Portsmouth. Leonard John Garnett was born on 14/5/1923, address 19 Crofton Rd. North End Portsmouth and died  in Sept. 2005 aged 82 years at Bournmouth.  Enid died on 12/2/1930 at 40 Frederick Rd. Hastings ( I think a relative's home) aged 29 years from Pulmonary tuberculosis. Her address was 111 Morning Lane Hackney, wife of Walter George Albert Garnett a journeyman plumber. Her mother was the informant.

I shall do some more microfische searches when I get to Sydney and maybe I will find a Johnson connection. Not everyone is on Ancestry.com yet. The name and dates are similar so who knows!

Helllo Robyn, Thanks for all that info, Enid V K Pengilley is the only one i have been able to find that fits what little info i have. I don't think she ever actually married Ernest Johnson ( possibly Walter Ernest Johnson ), probably just a fling, but Enid Pengilley was named as my mothers mum on her birth cert . As far as my mother was aware her mother, Enid died around 1930. All in all I think this is the right one, but its hard to be sure. It didn't help that Ernest disappeared in about 1945 and mum was brought up by his wife Annie Johnson nee Lambert, and nobody told my mum anything about her birth mum until her eldest half sister died recently, and she was the one that knew most about the truth. Anyhow thanks for the info, if you do find out any more please do let me know.

Regards

Peter

Hello again Peter. Thanks for replying and giving me the additional info on your family. I managed to look at some microfisches at the library in Sydney on the weekend but didn't find any other Enid Pengilleys (Pengelley ,Pengilly etc) to fit the time range we are looking at, so it seems even more likely this Enid is the one. However, I'll still keep looking for definiteproof. I think I found your mother's birthplace - was it in Woolich? I've noticed that Enid's address at the time she died was at Hackney and I know she had first cousins living at Debenham (Riddles). I don't know the distances between these districts in London, but they are in the same general area ,aren't they? Co-incidence??

Anyway, just in case this Enid is the correct one, I'd like you to know that I have a photo of Enid's father, William George Pengilley taken when he was a child and also one of his father William Pengilley senior. These COULDbe your great grandfather and great, great grandfather. How wonderful if they are! Let me know if you are interested in getting copies. William senior was a mariner, in the Royal Navy and old family members said here that he went to the Crimean War. If so, his records would be held at Kew. He later became a coastguard at Hastings ,a draper's porter, tobacconist and a naval pensioner. William senior was born in Devon in about 1830.

Thanks again Peter. Please let me know if you find out more info.     Regards Robyn

Hi Robyn,

I read with interest the stories on the English Pengilleys. I am descended from William Pengilley (1827)'s sister Eliza who came to Australia. I also have a photo which I believe is of William Pengilley taken in Hastings in the 1880's and would be interested in further photos to confirm if it is indeed him. I also have a photo which may be of his mother Elizabeth Skinner

Hello Dr Chris,

Pleased you contacted me concerning the Pengilley family as I've been doing  quite a lot of research and there is still quite a lot to discover!

Initially much of the research of William's family in Hastings was done using  micro fisches before the availability of the internet. I certainly could have saved hours of work if I'd left it a few years!

I have a couple of photos/photocopies of this William, one in his Crimean War uniform and another original  that was passed down to my father.

I gave copies of William's photos to a relative in Brisbane who has also been doing research and she is down Eliza's branch. Maybe these are the photos you are referring to, or maybe you have different ones.

My email address is robynpengilleyhope@hotmail.com

Looking forward to hearing from you.
