"Nicholas Spencer was the Earl of Spencer in England. After he arrived in Virginia he was also a member of the committee of the Association of the Northern Neck (Northumberland Records, 1667), was a member of the House of Burgess 1666-1676. From 1675-1676, he was appointed one of the commissioners for employing friendly Indians. He was against hostile tribes. He was appointed Secretary of State in 1678, again in 1680 and 1685. He was president of the Council in 1685 and was acting Governor from September 1683 to April 1684. By the death of his brothers, he was the only surviving son of his father at his death and succeeded to all the estates in Bedfordshire and
Huntingtonshire in England." Nicholas served in the military Culpepper, Virginia. Appears to have remained Loyal to England in the Revolution - Virginia Historical Magazine, Volume 5, Page 65, "Nicholas Spencer...gentleman who did the country very good service against the Rebells in ..." Taken from "List of Persons Who Suffered By Bacon's Rebellion" Nicholas was elected in Virginia.
