Hurlin Shelton Web Site

Welcome to Hurlin Shelton Web Site

A warm hello and welcome to  all who share the Hurlin surname ,and variations of the name including Urlin, Urling (who we believe all variants of one family name) to those who are descended from Hurlins or are married to Hurlins and to anyone who for whatever reason may be interested, welcome all  guests and friends. This is the best link to the Hurlin Family tree: I have to date made two online trees this one is better)http://www.myheritage.com/site-69798232/hurlin-shelton-web-site -My name is Mark Hurlin-Shelton -I am the grandson of Edwin Hurlin who emigrated to Cape Town South Africa in 1948.   i have had an interest  for family Tree research since my teens -which in the past year has really bloomed, thanks to receiving a substantial "treasure chest' of family info from my aunt Sonia -including  some copies of old photographs , documents and some copies of family trees drawn up  by family researcher Eilleen Frayne.   I  learnt lhat the Hurlins  have  a long and interesting heritage as descendants of french- Huguenot silk -weavers who most likely came from france to england likely as early as 1685 and possibly even sooner .The  family surname was in London from 1621 (there were more ancient versions of the name spelt differently , eg: Hurlewyn-(of Norman descent) that had been in England since the time of the Battle of Hastings although the earliest confirmed prescence in London of an ancestor of my line is that of Robert Hurlin in  the early 1700s-- the grandfather of my great -grandfathers great grandfather. My interest was especially sparked after receiving copies  of family Trees and research by  Eileen Constance Frayne a family researcher whose many years of  hard work has resulted in a goldmine of detailed family info. This in the last year or so i have built upon as best i could-- and making internet contact with newly discovered relatives has helped me 'Grow the tree"somewhat.  so very many  of us Hurlins descend from Martin and Sarah Hurlin- both children of  third generation Silkweaver families born in London in the 1700s-and both families with their ancestral roots in Normandy , France. Sarah and Martin (my great grandfathers- great grandparents) had ten children in total ,  one of whom , James, died in infancy .All of us who  can be termed the  "Spitalfields/-English line of Hurlins will descend from these five. all other Hurlins will descend from  Huguenot refugees who in about 1685   fled for their lives  to Holland, Belgium , Germany or Switzerland to escape persecution by the Catholic Church of the day.  I have also heard of some Hurlins who fled to Ireland (later these same emigrated to USA)- as well as some to Canada , i have also received info suggesting some Hurlins may have fled to Scandinavian countries, and i have heard from a Hurlin who says her ancestors lived in Finland - i have also seen documenation of Afro American -Hurlins of french Colonial ancestry who were taken into Slavery (info i have found in a USA census report. I have also discovered records  Hurlins who have descendants in Canada. Today Hurlins may be found living in the USA, Australia , England , South Africa, Australia, South America, Germany, France and SwitzerlandFor six generations my Hurlin ancestors-  lived and worked and raised their children-in the London Spitalfields weavers enclaves of Bethnal green and Shoreditch These folk remained weavers up until the industrial revolution forced most weavers   into changing their career. It appears that  In my line- my great grandfather Joseph was the first to leave weaving to become a bootmaker. and my grandfather Edwin was born in Shoreditch near Spitalfields not too far from where his ggfather's ggfather ancestor Robert  Hurlin first settled six generations before. The diaspora -the 'Scattering" or dispersal of French Huguenot protestants happened after aggressive persecution by the Catholics Church and State  caused our ancestors to flee for their lives,  initially to settle Holland, Belgium, England , Germany and Switzerland.  From there subsequent generations have emigrated to the USA ,South America,  Australia ,  South Africa and CanadaThis site was created using MyHeritage.com.  If you have any comments or feedback about this site, please either leave a message in the guest book.or if youre on facebook leave a message on the Hurlin History Group wall,or any associated Hurlin groups. Why not also  Peter Hurlins "Are you a Hurlin" group where you will find most of the online Hurlins on facebook may be found. or anyone interested- i have created a few  associated family groups on facebook that you can  check out and  i have created a few Hurlin Photo Albums, where i have collected a fairsized body of photos-and  family info which is evolving into 'The Hurlin Archive   here is our Tree: http://www.myheritage.com/FP/family-tree.php?s=69'The Hurlin genealogy Album":http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=67649&id=659669289&l=f42bf72361 Edwin hurlin and family and Ronald Hurlin and family- Photos  ( available to  members of Edwin and Ronald Hurlin family  only - or by special permission contact me .@ balloonzoo@gmail.com History of the French Huguenots and the Hurlin family by Mark Hurlin Shelton http://www.facebook.com/search/?o=69&init=s%3Agroup&q=Hurlin#/album.php?aid=67040&id=659669289&op=12Links to internet  articles on Sarah Hurlin our ancestor http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/adsdata/cbaoccpap/pdf/121/12103006.pdfhttp://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/adsdata/cbaoccpap/pdf/121/12104003.pdfhttp://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/adsdata/cbaresrep/pdf/086/08611003.pdf link to a genealogy of  people in Canada descended from a Martin Hurlin -this appears to be a different Martin to the one I descend from- but this suggests a curious coincidence because this Martin named his son Michael, and our Martins father was named Michael. it may also be interesting to note- just as the Hurlin surname was changed from hurlin to "Urlin" due to what is probably clerical error- on this geneology Martin Hurlins son Michael somehow undergoes a surname change to "Hurdlin."The Hurlin name lost its "H" for three generations (from Robert Hurlin to the birth of Martin- due to a clerical error- emigrates had to say their name to the clerk (as most people in that time were illliterate. and tif a french Hurlin  says his name aloud the "H" would be silent. Thus Martin was recorded as being "Urlin"- his children have three different spelled versions of the name on their birth records: Urlin Hurlin and Hurling.there is therefore good reason to believe that all versions of the Surname are all essentialy one- here is a link to a "Urlin " family site  worth investigating to see how the two family names may be linked. The following site contains a family Tree showing a Hurling who was also a weaver living in the Whitechapel area(which i know was part of the spitalfields group of Weavers enclaves where French Huguenot Refugee weaver families came to settle.   We may deduce from this  that bearing  a different  versions of this name , need not mean that you descend from a different family -for all versions of this name  we all share the same family crest. so many of  http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/u/t/Debbie-Sutherland-NS/BOOK-0001/0017-0013.html "the Hurlin History Group":http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=58003881455Are you a Hurlin ?http://www.facebook.com/search/?o=69&init=s%3Agroup&q=Hurlin#/group.php?gid=7419696603&ref=search&sid=659669289.4248142079..1http://www.facebook.com/search/?o=69&init=s%3Agroup&q=Hurlin#/group.php?gid=7419696603&ref=search&sid=659669289.4248142079..1  descendants of Martin and Sarah Hurlin http://www.facebook.com/search/?o=69&init=s%3Agroup&q=Hurlin#/group.php?gid=81731994872 a link to a online family tree that features Martin and Sarah Hurlin:http://www.peavey.org/genealogy/family.php?famid=F124 Hurlin Arts http://www.facebook.com/search/?o=69&init=s%3Agroup&q=Hurlin#/group.php?gid=63516890114 we're descended from Hooligans you know. http://www.facebook.com/search/?o=69&init=s%3Agroup&q=Hurlin#/group.php?gid=71338005609Huguenot related links http://www.huguenotsociety.org.uk/uploads/docs/TracingYourPoorHuguenotAncestors.pdfThe French Hospital http://images.google.co.za/imgres?imgurl=http://www.frenchhospital.org.uk/book/frenchhospital.jpg&imgrefurl.All Hurlins may be pleased to know that the French Hospital offers Free welfare benefits to all Hurlins and to all who can show that they  descend from Huguenot ancestry.
