It followed the 1845 American annexation of Texas, which Mexico still considered its territory because Mexico refused to recognize the Treaties of Velasco. The war ended with Mexico ceding significant territories to the U.S. in exchange for $15 million and the assumption of $3.25 million in debt, resulting in a 55% loss of its territory.
