Civil registration—the recording of births, marriages, and deaths by civil authorities—was instituted in the Netherlands in 1811. This collection is an index to Rotterdam birth records from 1811 to 1913. Records typically include the following information: name of child, parents’ names, and child’s birth date and place. Note that if a child was illegitimate the birth record typically did not name the father, even if the father was known. This index also provides the register number—a unique number per record and year. The year and register number is necessary information for ordering a copy of the original birth record from the Stadsarchief Rotterdam (Rotterdam City Archives). The original record may provide additional information such as the residence, ages, and occupations of the parents, and information about the witnesses. This index was created by staff and volunteers at the Stadsarchief Rotterdam and was obtained from <a href=“http://www.rotterdamopendata.nl”>www.rotterdamopendata.nl</a> .
