How can I create a family tree for free with Family Tree Builder?
Creating your free family tree is very easy. Use this Step-by-step guide and start building your own family tree today.
Set up your project:
1. Open Family Tree Builder and click on ‘New’ button on the left corner:
2. The steps will guide you through naming your family tree, opting to sync it with the online site, and customizing your project's language
3. Don't forget to click ‘Finish’ to get started with adding people to your free family tree.
Add people and information to your family tree:
4. Add relevant information about each person. Valuable information to add to a person in your family tree includes vital records (birth, marriage, death), historical documents, and of course photos.
To add photos you click on the ‘Photos’ button on the main toolbar:
Follow the steps to select the photo from your computer and save it. You can add information about the photo and tag people on it.

If you already have the software installed, please note that syncing with your MyHeritage family site is no longer possible following the macOS Sequoia 15.4.1 security patch released on April 16th. If you haven’t yet installed this update, we strongly recommend syncing your tree now, as this option will no longer be available once the patch is applied.
