My name is Chris Nel
and I am the Webmaster of this site.
This site was created using MyHeritage.com.
Many of the people on my 'tree' are clippings (leaves and branches) lying on the floor. Some belong, some probably don't. I haven't got enough information to decide yet.

I have recently come upon the idea that the Nel name may have been derived from O'Neill. It is said that an O'Neill family abandoned Ireland about 1100AD for France where they dropped the O', becoming Neill. It is then said that over time, the second 'l' was dropped leaving the name as Neil.Subsequently, as the story goes, the 'i' was dropped when the family moved to the Netherlands, becoming Nel.
I am not so sure that the original Guillame Nel (Neel) originated from Ireland as all the references I have seen so far indicate Neel as the family name. Has anybody else heard this story.
If you know more, please let me know as I am very intrigued as to where this story originated.
