I am trying to use the places and mapping functions of FTB but it seems to act very randomly.
1. Some places are not known to FTB wich is OK. At the right side there is a question mark showing that the place could not be found. But clicking on that question mark give a strange response, see Details-fact.jpg. It says "No internet connection - place could not be found". Therse no problem with my Internet connection. It would be much more useful if a place fact window would open where I e.g. could give the coordinates for this place so that FTB would know in the future.
2. Using the Maps for solving above issue works very strange. When starting the Maps I got the window shown in Maps-1.jpg.
After moving and scrolling I get i right. I then use the advanced search and searches for the person in question and gets the view seen in Maps-2.jpg. As you can see part of the place name is grey. I assume that this indicates that the place is not found. The only part that is blue is Sverige (Sweden). So FTB knows it is in Sweden. Now I can click on that part and a window opens, see Maps-3.jpg. At the top it says Edit/fix this place. Clicking on that gives me a new window which is almost the same as the previous but there is an link at the top which is barely visible. See Maps-4.jpg.
Clicking on that link brings me to the window shown in Maps-5.jpg As you can see I now have the option to enter coordinates. So, entering the coordinates for the place in question and clicking OK actually brings me to the correct spot. See Maps-6.jpg. The big problem here is that as soon as I leave the Maps view and comes back. These coordinates are gone. They are never saved.
Hopefully some of the FTB developpers are reading this. I would very much whish for improvements of the Places and Maps function in FTB.
The whole things boils down to the usage of names vs usage of cooridnates in the PedigreeMap communication with the Google Maps API. I have proposed an improvement of the PedigreeMap function in MyHeritage. You will find it the Product Suggestions forum. And as you say, I will mail it directly to email@example.com. Thanks for the advice.
