My name is Eric Hanich
and I started this site to capture the history of the Hanich Family in Australia.
The original Hanich's were Danube Swabians who were German colonists who were invited by Austrian-Hungarian Emperors to settle and repopulate the land after the Ottoman Empire was defeated. The German population became known as Danube Swabians. This name was derived from the Danube river, where they lived now and Swabia, a province in Germany, where many of the settlers came from, originally.
They were hard workers who did what was asked of them. They stabilized the area, prospered and supported the various governments. This all came to a crashing halt in 1944 - with the expulsion of the Danube Swabians from their new home towns and ethnic genocide.
Some came to Australia, some to the USA, some stayed in Austria.
