My name is Antony Delwynne Rew Snaith aka Delwyn or Del, and I started this site.
This site was created using MyHeritage. This is a great system, which allows anyone like you and me to create a private site for their family, build their family-tree and share family photos.
If you have any comments or feedback about this site, please click to contact me. My surname (father’s family name) is SNAITH (SNAYTHE in old English) from County Durham in the North-East of England. I have traced the family back from Darlington (where I was born) to High and Low Coniscliffe, Witton-le-Wear and finally to Lanchester, all in County Durham, England.
I have just had my DNA results back and find that I am:
Irish, Scottish, and Welsh 47.6% English 32.3% Finnish 6.6% Scandinavian 5.0% Ashkenazi Jewish 1.4% North African 6.1% Nigerian 1.0%
The ancestor that I can trace back the furthest is JOHN SNAITH who was born in approximately 1539 in Lanchester. He was born during the 1509-1547 reign of Henry VIII. The information on him is quite vague, but his son GEORGE SNAITH was born in Lanchester on 9 November 1566. George’s son THOMAS W. SNAITH was born on 11 Feb 1593 in Witton-le-Wear, County Durham. He married Mary Anne Hodgson on the 19 June 1590.
My mother’s father, REW, came from Bristol, although he was actually born in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire, Wales, in 1877 at his maternal grandparents’ house, who were JOHN SWEET born 1815/16 and MARY SWEET [KING] born in 1814.
My maternal grandmother came from Blaenavon, Monmouthshire, Wales, which is two valleys away from where my grandfather was born.
I was always told by my mother that she had two cousins by the name of FOX who left South Wales to go to America to dabble in films (20th Century). I have NOT found this connection. I have traced the FOXES leaving Wales to go to America, but no further west than Ohio.
My great-great-great- grandfather was ROBERT FOX, born in either 1797 or 1802 in Monmouthshire, Wales.
My wife, CELIA SNAITH nee GRACE’s sides of the family is GRACE and McDONAGH.
Her father LEONARD GEORGE GRACE was born in Newhaven, Sussex, England. His ancestors moved around from Chatham to Southampton, before ending up in Newhaven.
Celia’s mother’s family is the McDONAGHS from County Sligo, Ireland. They moved to Scotland (at the time of the potato famine, I think), before moving to the north-east of England, to Bishop Auckland and Darlington.
I have also moved around the country a bit. In 1975, CELIA and I moved from Darlington to a village called Toddington, near Luton in Bedfordshire, where our son STUART DAVID SNAITH and our daughter HELEN ELIZABETH SNAITH were born.
In 2012, CELIA and I moved again, to an even smaller village this time, in Norfolk. HELEN lives in Cheshire and STUART has moved to Canada, after marrying a Canadian.
Both CELIA and I are now retired. We are Parish Councillors and play carpet cowls for the village team.
