Cancer victim honored

Dear Editor,

Lanie and Jerry Rose, part-time residents of Columbus and proud owners of three Colorado County ranches, want to invite all their friends and neighbors to the 2009 Run for the Rose on Sunday, March 29, at Houston’s Reliant Park. What a great way to get in shape for the Colorado County Relay for Life.

A customized portrait from Turner/Chapman Gallery in Columbus is being offered as one of our raffle prizes. Ken Turner has painted the most beautiful portraits of our own children. We are thrilled that he is offering his exceptional talent to a very lucky winner.

Our precious daughter Marnie was a second-year pediatric resident at The University of Texas - Houston Medical School and Memorial Hermann Hospital when she died of brain cancer on Aug. 23, 2002. We started the Dr. Marnie Rose Foundation to continue the work Marnie had begun. Brain cancer robbed Marnie of her career, her mobility and then her life. It could not, however, crush her spirit, her humor, or her will to survive. Marnie starred in the critically acclaimed ABC television series, Houston Medical, to increase awareness of brain cancer and to give encouragement and strength to those who were ill. She and her dedicated doctors at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center never gave up hope that her treatments would work. She would not want us to give up hope for a cure.

The 2008 Run for the Rose netted an incredible $400,000 for Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center!! All monies received through sponsorships and donations go directly to these two hospitals, not for expenses.

An estimated $5-10 of federal funding and grant support is generated from each $1 of seed money provided by donors. You make an incredible difference to so many lives.

Our previous funds have been used to create and develop Memorial Hermann’s pediatric palliative care program and to outfit the first ever pediatric Life Flight helicopter.

The 2009 funds will be designated for the development of Children’s Memorial Herm-ann’s Neuroscience Center, which offers the latest innovations in the treatment of autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, congenital malformations, brain tumors and much more. At M.D. Anderson, we have watched our funding of cutting-edge immunotherapy research extend the lives of patients. How thrilling it is to see them participate in our Run!

We continue to fund these patients on their clinical trial. We also fund new drug development and the growing field of personalized medicine, treatments specifically desig-ned for each patient’s genetic make-up. These treatments stand to benefit all cancer patients.

The 2008 Run will wind around Reliant Park and culminate in Reliant Center, site of the post-run party.

As always, our sponsors will offer an exciting post-run celebration with delicious food, beautiful awards, family entertainment and a great play area for children. Parking is free.

View our web site, www.RunfortheRose.com, for more information.

With everyone’s generous support, we will have given our two hospitals over $1,500,000 in seven years.

Sincerely,

Lanie Rose
