After the Christening of George Washington, later General and still later President, A gentleman attending wrote in his journal about George Eskridge being properly honored at the christening. Seems this reference makes some people believe that George Washington was named after Mary Ball Washington's beloved guardian. Some have our first president listed as George Eskridge Washington and some have the guardian listed as George Washington Eskridge. I've seen documentation that claims Washington and none of his siblings had middle names. This was not uncommon in that time. Col. George Eskridge had his name in a lot of legal documents in the Northern Neck of Virginia. He was a member of the House of Burgesses. I would be greatly interested if some one would show me documents that even showed Col. Eskridge with a middle initial of "W" I truly believe that neither the Father of Our Country nor Col. Eskridge had the other's surname as a middle name.
Click on the link for Family Tree. There 3 boxes show up These show her, her father and grandfather. Click on the grandfather. In the box on the right side, click on his brother, Kokum Powhatan. The discussion in the references seems to think that Kokum was married more than once and that one of his wives was Pocahontas. This is a tenuous connection at best. I don't know how far you want to take connections from collateral family members. However, is is interesting regardless of your choice to put it in your tree.
While my 7 times grandmother's, half-sister's, step-daughter's, brother's-in-law has his image on the U.S. Dollar Bill. and this is interesting. My connection to him is our direct descent from Edward III that joins us as, I believe without looking it up again, 13th cousins, 9 times removed. George's 8th cousin, 8 times removed is Kate Middleton, AKA The Duchess of Cambridge. Kate just gave birth to her 3rd child. His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge. Royal don't usually need surnames. They use them, I suppose, when signing a check or a legal document. They are known based on various things during their life. Prince Louis' grand mother Diana, Princess of Wales, was know by

Posthumously, as in life, she is most popularly referred to as "Princess Diana", a title not formally correct and one she never held.[c] She is still sometimes referred to in the media as "Lady Diana Spencer" or simply as "Lady Di". In a speech after her death, then-Prime Minister Tony Blair referred to Diana as the People's Princess.
Well, here I carry on and on. Anything you can use there?
This is hard to read properly because it is vertical. It reads better in GENi because there are 8 rows of data. Each two rows go together with the person's name on top and the relationship under it. The arrow points to the next person. You don't read it top to bottom but bottom to top.
Ontonah Mary Arroyah Meese her sister
Grace Kay her daughter
Capt. John Ashton her husband
Actually reads Ontonah Mary Arroyah Meese → her daughter Grace Kay → her husband Capt. John Ashton. You need to see it on GENi to get the full impact.
Each name is a link to that person's GENi Profile while in GENi. Once GENi has created this chart, you will find your connection to anyone on the chart at the top of the profile with the first two and the last two shown with a box telling you how many others will be displayed if you click on the box. When you first go to a GENi Profile, there is a similar box asking if you want them to search for your connection. As I said, it takes a bit of time to assemble it. They Email when they have it done. They even have a way to display this that shows which generation each person is in. Sometimes the path goes back in time, some times it goes sideways. That's husband to wife, brother to sister. At some point it might go down in time but not if you're a direct descendant.
This has been 292 lines of text over the last 3 messages today. I hope this will prove a great help. I also hope the at least some is news to you. I thank you for your time in reading all this. I wish you well in this pursuit of the 60,000,000,000 piece jigsaw puzzle we call Genealogy.
If you are a registered member of GENi, they have a service that looks up your relationship to the person who's profile your viewing. It may take a bit of time for them to assemble the list. They will send you an Email to inform you that they finished, with a link to view the data. Since membership is free, there's no reason not to join us.

Suggest you search this forum for postings by Lou Poole. She has found records of Captain John Ashton and Grace in Warwick County, Virginia, as early as 1650, which cast doubt on her identity as a daughter of Col. Henry Meese. It seems that she was previously married to William Best of Warwick County; and that she married Captain John Ashton, in 1651, after the death of William Best, in 1650. Captain John Ashton was an attorney and was closely involved with the Dade Family, who muved to the Northern Neck of Virginia about the same time (1662-1664) as the Ashtons. It may be possible to trace Captain John Ashton further through some of these connections.
