Martens, is a Prussian Mennonite Family name, and is recorded as early as 1619.  The early Dutch form "Marten" is the equivalent of the German and English given name - "Martin".  The name occurred in the congregations at Danzig, Thiensdorf, Orloff, Rosenort, Elbing, Tiegenhagen, Ladekopp, Furestenwerder, Heubuden and Konigsberg.  From Prussia the name was transplanted to Russia.  Many of the names appear in both the Chortitza and the Molotschna settlements.

One of the most proment was Johann Johann Martens the Altesta. The original family village was Neuendorf, Chortitza Colony, with the family having arrived in the late 1790s from the Halbstadt area of Prussia.  Besides many Ministers in the family Martens also had links to linen weaving, trade in spices and distilling industry.  The family ties were to the Heubuden Gemeinde in Prussia.

In 2010 a major DNA project took place in an attempt to help trace family lines more information can be found at http://www.mennonitedna.com/ .  The study found that there were 3 differant unconnected Martens linages.  These three lines are inconsistent with each other which supports the theory that there were 3 differant Martens progenitors:

1.) Johann Frank Martens (born 1865)

2.) Heinrich Frank Martens (born 1787)

3.) Peter Martens (born 1769) - the Martens of Olgafeld line.

Olgafeld was one of the villages of the Fuerterslande Colony, it was the home of Johann Martens.  The web site photo shows how the village looks to day.  Following the revolution the government tore down the village, the factory, and the orchards and turned the site into a cow pasture.  Olgafeld is no more.  Willi Vogts web site recently uploaded several maps of the villages and area they can be seen at http://chort.square7.ch/Pis/KF1943.pdf

If you are looking to do further research I would recommend that you look at the Richard Thiessen geneology resource web site - http://www.mennonitegenealogy.com/russia/ also a truily amazing web site is the one being put together by Willi Vogt which is very rich site on the Mother Colony Chortitza and the daughter colonies  http://chortiza.heimat.eu/ .

I would also like to acknowledge one individual who is responsible for me starting up this site and the Krahn's of Orenburg Am Ural site.  That is Viktor Giebler.  I am proud to say that he is my third cousin once removed.  Just before Christmas 2010 he invited me to join his site, as he pulled together a site featuring the Letkeman side of the family.  http://www.myheritage.com/site-62588231/giebler-loewenletkemansiemens-site He got me started on these reseach projects and for that I want to acknowledge him and to say thank-you.  The early information for the site came from cousin Hilda Petkau who had put together an early family tree on the Martens.

I would also like to acknowledge Bill and Elenora (Dyck) Janzen who have shared their work and publication A History of The Bernhard Jacob and Katharina (Martens) Dyck wing of the Martens family.  Over the time the contents of the publication will be added to the site.

Enjoy and happy hunting for your relatives both close and far.
