1870 Norway Census
250,299 records
The 1870 census was conducted on December 31, 1870 in 60 cities and towns in Norway. The returns of 50 of these have survived and a full list of cities and towns included, by county, is shown in the extended description below. These census records contain the person’s name, gender, place-of-birth, year-of-birth, marital status, and place of residence. The original records additionally contain an inconsistently recorded “civil status” (borgerling stilling) field which varies from record to record, and when not empty, is most commonly an occupation and less frequently a relationship statement. This collection is provided through cooperation with the National Archives of Norway.

Recognizing the need for updated information due to the rapid population growth in urban centers the government requested this special census of cities and towns to be conducted. A sample census form was provided but as the forms were designed and printed separately by each city the final forms used vary somewhat from place to place. Norwegian urban centers included were classified either as a kjøpstad (market town) or ladested (small seaport).

The cities and towns included by county or municipal county are:
Akershus:

Drøbak

Hvitsten

Son

Aust-Agder:

Arendal

Grimstad

Lillesand

Risør

Tvedestrand

Bergen:

Bergen

Buskerud:

Drammen

Holmsbu

Hønefoss

Kongsberg

Hedmark:

Gjøvik

Kongsvinger

Møre og Romsdal:

Ålesund

Kristiansund

Molde

Nord-Trøndelag:

Levanger

Namsos

Steinkjer

Nordland:

Bodø

Oppland:

Lillehammer

Oslo:

Kristiania

Østfold:

Fredrikshald

Fredrikstad

Halden

Moss

Sarpsborg

Rogaland:

Egersund

Kopervik

Skudeneshavn

Sokndal

Sogn og Fjordane:

Florø

Sør-Trøndelag:

Trondheim

Telemark:

Brevik

Langesund

Porsgrunn

Skien

Troms:

Tromsø

Vest-Agder:

Flekkefjord

Haugesund

Kristiansand

Mandal

Vestfold:

Holmestrand

Horten

Larvik

Sandefjord

Svelvik

Tønsberg

The 10 cities and towns for which the 1870 census returns have been lost are:

Hølen, Akershus

Hamar, Hedmark

Åsgårdstrand, Vestfold

Stathelle, Telemark

Kragerø, Telemark

Farsund, Vest-Agder

Sandes, Rogaland

Stavanger, Rogaland

Vardø, Finnmark

Vadsø, Finnmark
