Thomas moved to his fathers 630 acre tract on the south side of the Maharen River and Avents Creek in Brunswick County, Virginia. On 3 Nov 1750 he acquired the adjoining 476 acres from the colony of Virginia, and on 11 May 1754, he bought further adjoining 130 acres on Avent's Creek. He may have been a merchant as well as a planter.

He sold a total of 630 acres in 4 transactions from 1757 to 1770. Remaining property willed to his children and daughter Sarah's children. He was also bequeathed land and slaves by his father's will in 1767.

Thomas and his wife were second cousins. Thomas's grandmother Alice Warren was a sister to Elizabeth's grandfather Allen Warren.
