Biography

There seems to be some confusion about Moses' first wife. Some say that it was Elizabeth Poole and some say Elizabeth Kirk. Elizabeth Poole married James Kirk and they had five children. After the death of James and the death of Moses' first wife (with whom he had 8 children) elizabeth and Moses married and had 9 more children. So it appears that Elizabeth Poole and Elizabeth Kirk are one and the same.

The 1840 census shows Moses serving in the War of 1812.

The 1850 census shows Moses to be 69 years old and owning $800 in real estate. According to the Smyth Co., VA., records, his will gave his plantation to Elizabeth plus personal property during her lifetime. At her death all was to go to his and Elizabeth's children. Son's John and Alfred were named as executors. They renounced their duty, so the estate was committed to the sheriff for administration.

The 1860 census shows Elizabeth as a widow, age 61, with four children ages 16-30 living with her.

Moses and Thomas are said to have lived on Comers Creek just above the Hurricane in Virginia. Moses and his brother, George, also owned land together.

It is believe that Moses was disowned for marrying contrary to discipline on June 20, 1807, on a complaint sent to Lost Creek Monthly Meeting. Then on November 28, 1807, he was dismissed for having married out of unity. This would be for his first marriage
