James Chapman  Lemuel Merry Sledge was born in Surry Co Va circa1801 and died at Toccopola in Ponotoc Co Ms September of 18 89. (Proof--stated in his Estate Settlement). He married #1 Mary W. Dodd, daughter of Daniel Dodd, in Hardeman Co Tn 24 Dec 1825 or 1826 (number not clear on the marriage license). He was living in Henderson Co Tn when the 1930 census (p107) was taken. He had two sons under five years of age. He and his wife were both under 30 years of age. He moved his family, along with the Daniel Dodd family, to Pontotoc Co Ms about 1833-34 and purchased land from the Chickasaw Cession. Children from this union we believe were Eldridge W, George (identified in the Wilkerson Sledge research), Rufus, Sarah A.,Theodoric F., (Possibly a female and male who may be the ones who perished in a fire -- family legend), Margaret Elizabeth "Betty", Magnus D.,Lemuel C., Jr., and Mary C. His second wife was Nancy Jane Terry, daughter of William and Permelia Terry. No marriage license has been found. They may have married in Calhoun Co, a burned county, or they may have jumped the broom. They had eleven children: James William, Julia A., Gilbert F., Permelia, Charles Fountain, Lewis Calvin, Marshall Porter, Henry Boygard, Susan Ann, Parthenia PUlley, and Camay Alexander. [Note: Children of both marriages are listed in order of births.]

Some researchers believe Lem was married three times. They are wrong. His Estate Settlement pretty well proves that. Eldridge W. Sledge, et al -- vs -- J. W. Sledge, et al.
