The census data would indicate that Peter Dagenhart was married three times:
Peter was first married to Martha "Mattie" Fox on 12/2/1830 in Lincoln County, NC (sourced through Lincoln County marriage records) with whom he had his 12 children. An unsourced report has her death at April 28, 1861 which appears likely as Mattie appeared in the 1860 census but did not appear in the 1870 census. In the 1870 census, Peter and his children appear without Mattie and Susan Fincannon (age 20) was listed as a female servant in the home.
According to the 1880 census, Peter was married to Hannah M. (maiden name unknown) sometime between 1870 and 1880 and in the 1880 census, Hannah M. was reported to be incapacitated by breast cancer. In the 1880 census, Susan Fincannon (age 31) was again listed but her relationship to the head of household was not listed.
The records related to Susan Fincannon vary in terms of her birth year (1840, 1841, 1842, 1850). The first record of Susan Fincannon was in the 1860 census where she appears as part of the household of Wilson Isenhour whose census data was listed immediately following that of Peter Dagenhart and his family. In 1870, she appears (as noted above) as a servant in the home of Peter Dagenhart. In the 1880 census (also as noted above), she appears in the home of Peter Dagenhart with no reference as to her role in the household beyond "keeping house". In the 1900 census, Susan Dagenhart (age 59) appears in the household of Silas Jolly listed as "aunt" as her relation to the head of household. In the 1910 and 1920 censuses, she appears as the aunt of Louisa (aka Lundy/Lindy) Jolly (also spelled Jally, Jallie, Jollie) who was widowed between 1900 and 1910. Susan Fincannon Dagenhart's death certificate in 1925 documents her being the widow of Peter Dagenhart. There is no record of a marriage between Susan Fincannon and Peter Dagenhart so it is assumed that if they did legally marry, it was after Hannah Dagenhart passed away between the 1880 census and Peter Dagenhart's passing in 1882.
