One story I was told was that John walked all the way from Sugar Grove, VA to Missouri in order to avoid the drraft. However, when I found his obituary I learned that he served in the Civil War with the home guards of Virginia. And didn't even get to Missouri until after the war. Another story is that he rode a mule from VA to MO. Now this part might well be true.

I'm not positive, but from reading the obit on John's wife, it appears that he may have farmed the ground of his father in law after his death. I do know that one picture I have has Sarah Ann (Hayes) Johnson in it, so it's my beleif that she may have lived with them after his death.
